Although conceived as a series of 10 novels, Stieg Larsson only wrote three books. He died of a heart attack shortly after the Millennium trilogy was completed. The Millennium books are fast paced, very well written with memorable characters who are ingenious in their plot resolutions.
There are two main Swedish characters: Mikael Blomqvist, a publisher and left wing, investigative journalist and Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker with attitude and a dragon tattoo.

You forgot one key name: Richard North Patterson. He should be at the top of the list, especially as he eschews pumping out the canned books. As a writer, he is a joy to read. He comes closest to Stieg Larsson. One other author should be on the list: Anne Perry. Her writing is exquisite.
